Liam Lawson retired from Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix after sustaining front wing damage

Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson disclosed he barely escaped a life-threatening collision during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals darted across the track right in his path

The alarming incident took place on the third lap when safety workers were spotted on the racing surface as Lawson was rejoining the race following an early pitstop to change his compromised front wing

Racer's Instant Response

Immediately after, the team's competitor Lawson spoke to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you witness that? I nearly... ended their lives"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"

"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and there were just two dudes dashing across the track"

"I nearly hit one of them, honestly, it was incredibly risky"

Security Issues Highlighted

"Evidently there's been a failure in communication somewhere but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"

"We cannot comprehend how on a active circuit marshals can be authorized to just sprint across the track in that manner. I have no idea why, I'm sure we'll get some sort of explanation, but it really can't happen again"

Formal Inquiry in Progress

F1's overseeing organization, the FIA, is actively examining the circumstances

"After an occurrence at turn one, the race directors was notified that wreckage remained on the track at the apex of that corner" stated the governing body

"During the third lap, safety personnel were alerted and placed on standby to access the circuit and clear the fragments once the entire field had cleared the area"

"The moment it was realized that Lawson had entered the pits, the instructions to dispatch personnel were rescinded and a caution signal was shown in that section"

"Our inquiry continues what transpired subsequent to that time"
