How Are You? It’s Alan (Partridge) Review – Unrivaled Comic High Points on the Small Screen
Alan Partridge finds himself in a predicament! But then, who isn’t these days? When we last saw him on screen, Alan suffered a public collapse while fronting the entertainment series This Time, ending the series quite literally locked out of the BBC. As his latest self-made endeavor begins, the light documentary How Are You? It’s Alan (Partridge), Alan discloses he’s experienced another setback by fainting into the lap of a female interviewee at a corporate event for Norfolk agribusiness stalwarts. Hard moments, but such characters rebound: connect struggles with societal themes and try to develop a program from it.
Exploring the Epidemic of Anxiety
How Are You? showcases the beloved persona in documentary style, probing widespread emotional struggles that he feels is worsening: “If I can use an outdated term, it’s just got mental!” The journey will see him experiment with religion, reconnect with friends from school, and take a lot of restorative country walks, as well as confronting his recent past. The first installment leads to a tense yet relieving meeting with “Sidekick” Simon Denton (Tim Key), an ex-co-worker from broadcasting days, and throughout the series, hidden moments from his career emerge.
For Coogan and his long-term writing/directing collaborators, How Are You? marks a change of pace. In contrast to earlier innovations, How Are You? sometimes rehashes past ideas: along with bringing back former styles, the series echoes past satirical documentaries of the last decade. As his life intertwines with the subject matter, viewers will think of his podcast work.Contrasting Alans
This leads to a minor issue. There are two Alans: Winning Alan (currently has a big paid presenting gig) and Wilderness Alan (doesn’t), and although Wilderness Alan was the star of the faultless TV sitcom I’m Alan Partridge back in 1997, a nostalgic take has developed in books and audio projects. How Are You? situates us in his world and features Kelly as Katrina, Alan’s wildly unsuitable paramour from the podcast. However, this sad story – he refuses to accept her betrayal with an acquaintance and entrepreneur – feels like one that would have benefited from the slower pace of audio-only Alan, allowing audience creativity to enhance humor. When we can’t see him, Wilderness Alan has room to breathe: television nowadays feels more suited to putting Winning Alan under pressure and observing his collapse, as seen before.
The Genius of Sloppy Errors
Still, these are minor points compared to a major truth: across all platforms, he delivers the most laughs in Britain, and temporary versions still offer huge comedy than competing shows. How Are You? features Alan as star, producer, and director, which showcases his knack for blunders and misjudgments. If explosive fruit edits symbolize struggles, that’s what we’re getting, and no one corrects his verbal errors or the phrase “mental bealth henefits” in his voiceover. The slight grimace we regularly catch as he strides out of shot sensing the scene went poorly always delights, and nor do the idents he’s made to fit between segments, highlighted by his awkward, caring expressions while simultaneously swallowing a mouthful of humble British tea.
Striking Moments and Feelings
Can anything top his skip-side groans? Absolutely not. Visually he’s a feast too, with his new dye job several shades too light to be plausible, and his 2025 wardrobe featuring mustard chinos, contrasting shoes, an arsenal of body warmers and over-the-top joy about style revivals.
Plus, the subject matter here allows for the glimpses into Alan’s soul that emerged with the current writers. Several times, it delivers poignant moments, where his ignorance uncovers sorrow that almost has us crying tears of emotion, then the comedy returns and laughter resumes. This works due to long-term affection: all iterations are gladly received.
