British Broadens Methanol Toxicity Alert List with An additional 11 Nations

Methanol caution sign

The UK government has added eleven new countries to its official alert register concerning the threats of toxic alcohol toxicity from adulterated alcoholic drinks.

The expanded advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the number of reported cases" of industrial alcohol toxicity.

Just a few weeks ago, officials had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current register, after several notable events including the deadly loss of six tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being warned that even small amounts of toxic alcohol can cause blindness or loss of life within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Utilized?

Methanol is a poisonous industrial alcohol often utilized in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. It is not meant for drinking.

While it is inherently formed during the creation of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for ingestion through the refining procedure.

But in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to cut costs, and since it is flavorless and scentless, it is very difficult to detect.

Official Advice for Tourists

Foreign Office minister a senior official stated that every traveler should know the indicators of toxic alcohol contamination.

"When you are drinking spirits abroad, choose well-known venues and steer clear of local brews or complimentary drinks," Falconer advised.

"In case something appears suspicious, like a headache that's way worse than typical or sight issues – contact a doctor right away."

The complete roster of destinations noted as posing a risk of toxic alcohol poisoning presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
